Lead – Health and Hygiene
The raw material lead is one of the most researched metals. The independent study by the Institute of Occupational Medicine (IOM) in Edinburgh showed that processing of sheet lead poses no health risk. Sheet lead is classified as non-poisonous in its compact state and poses no threat to people or the environment.
Lead is toxic when it is inhaled or ingested in high doses, either in a dissolved form, as lead compounds, and/or in form of dusts and fumes. By adhering to simple hygienic measures these dangers can be avoided.
We recommend, therefore, following these basic guidelines when working with lead:
- The use of gloves when working with lead protects against injuries and contamination
- Always wash your hands before eating and smoking
- A mask must be worn when dust or fumes are produced
- When working in a closed environment (e.g. during welding or soldering work) make sure there is good ventilation
- Lead is a compact, heavy material. Rolls over 25 kg should never be moved by only one person
- Refined sheet lead products offer not only a multitude of surfaces and colours, but also additional safety during processing due to their hygienic sealing
By following these simple rules, applicable to many materials, you can avoid any danger to your health.
