Environment & Health

Lead has been used for centuries in many and varied economic activities. Rightly enough, nowadays applications such as lead for drinking water pipes or in petrol have disappeared. In today's applications, the correct use of lead as a material is no longer critical. Lead is assuredly one of the best researched and most controlled materials. For instance, the lead industry in agreement with the competent EU authorities has invested Euro 4 million in a voluntary Risk Assessment programme. Thanks to its participation in the Voluntary Risk Assessment of Lead (VRAL) supported by the Lead Development Association International (LDAI), Röhr + Stolberg GmbH is well prepared for inspection in accordance with REACH, the new EU Regulation on chemicals.

The main obligation of the lead industry and thus of Röhr + Stolberg GmbH, too, is the protection of our employees and the end-users of our products. In health and occupational safety we are subject to the strict standards of the Calder Group which are more demanding even than the legally established standards.

Röhr + Stolberg GmbH contributes actively and decisively to environmental protection by using the most modern production facilities, ecological energy management and almost complete recovery of waste within our own production cycle. In addition, we have pledged ourselves to procure materials only from those producers with the latest smelter and filter technology.

Recycling

The fact that lead can be recovered 100 per cent and, at almost 100 percent the highest recycling quota among non-ferrous metals, are the greatest assets in lead's environmental balance sheet. Innovative technological processes make it possible to repeat the recycling process for lead without loss of quality. Nowadays worldwide over 60 per cent of lead required is produced from recycled materials. Over 80 per cent of lead is needed for car batteries. Thanks to the legal requirement in many countries to return used batteries, the proportion of recycled lead is continually on the increase.

Its low melting point of 327 degrees Celsius keeps the energy requirement for processing and recovery of this valuable raw material extremely low. Rolled lead is extremely durable, safe to use, limitlessly reusable and has barely any effect on the exploitation of natural resources. The proportion of secondary lead, i.e.: lead from recycled sources at Röhr + Stolberg GmbH is already above 90 per cent and for applications in the construction business has even reached 100 per cent.

Quality

All Röhr + Stolberg GmbH's products stand for guaranteed quality, safety and transparency on which customers can always rely. A quality policy proven over the years is the basis for Röhr + Stolberg GmbH's successful quality management system which of course is certified in line with DIN EN ISO 9001 and DIN ISO 14001.

As the first German rolled lead manufacturer with transport pallets according to DIN EN 12195-1 and VDI guidelines 2700 certified by DEKRA, Röhr + Stolberg is also setting standards in cargo and transport safety.
